BEING AUGUST
Regular members of Plankind and readers of this column could be forgiven for thinking this may be some kind of metaphysical diatribe on how one can take on the attributes of the month of August. You’d almost be right!
In fact, this Philosopher-in-Residence wanted to reflect on how we can seek to be described as “august” in the way we conduct ourselves.
Perhaps you have found more and more interactions are taking place online? Or maybe you have always lacked confidence in certain personal or professional situations.
Being august is defined as being respected, impressive. And one key thing you need to know, is that this is not the same as being liked (although you will often be liked or admired if you are respected and impressive).
I’d posit that the power of saying no and setting clear boundaries, is the number one tool in your bid to be identified as that august, confident person you want to be identified as.
So, your homework for the fortnight is to select one situation – personal or professional – that you would usually keep quiet in or begrudgingly say yes to undertaking. Plan how to say no, and follow through on saying no. And let us know how it goes!
Next fortnight I’ll be writing On Midsummer. Take a break from the sunshine to settle down and read it! Please get in touch with any particular aspects of this subject you’d like me to write about.
In the meantime,
Happy Planning
