IT’S BOOK REVIEW TIME!
Hello there Fans of Plans… It’s book review time. Have you been wondering what books you’d like read on your summer getaway this year? Well, fear not – here are some books that will not only entertain you, but may just help you to work well too.
Firstly, I’d like to say it’s important to take a break from work, so these recommendations aren’t solely for helping you in your work – but in life as a whole.
Title: The Power by Naomi Alderman
What’s it about? It’s a power-shift between women and men, when teenage girls discover a power they have that could help them, and all women, take over the world.
How is it linked to working well? One key theme is about power and what you would do with it. Would you look to oppress those that were in control before, who oppressed you? Or would you use your power for good. It has the reader questioning if the female/male dominance in society was reversed, what could this mean for personkind.
Title: Sankofa by Chibundu Onuzo
What’s it about? It follows the story of a woman trying to find her father, with roots going back to West Africa and his involvement in radical politics of the 1970s in London.
How is it linked to working well? For me, a key theme in this book is about finding out who you are, and how this is important to your wellbeing. The lead protagonist in the book is on a journey of discovery about herself that leads her to ask questions and get out of her comfort zone. Something we all need to do.
Title: A Man Call Ove by Frederik Backman
What’s it about? First of all a trigger warning, this book does contain attempted suicides by the main character. His wife has passed away and he wants to be with her. This is in fact a heartfelt tale about a man who, reluctantly, becomes as friend and confidante to his community.
How is it linked to working well? Seeing through the eyes of others and understanding what is going on with them is a strong theme throughout the book. Some of the interventions seem like random chance, but it’s about how being a strong community and supporting others can make a huge difference.
So Fans of Plans, amazing fiction novels to get you thinking about your life and working well – while still enjoying your much-earned breaks.
