ON ABLEISM

The Philosopher-in-Residence Blog Series from Make Me A Plan's Principal Planner, Anna Pascoe
20.07.2023.

It strikes me that we have made progress on equity and inclusion on some of the fundamental equality and human rights issues. More people are either not racist or homophobic, or are aware at the very least that it isn’t ok to have these views.

So why has the progress been slower when it comes to disabilities? That’s a figurative question, this isn’t the kind of subject where MMAP has the answers to steer the United Plandom.

It just doesn’t make sense. We know more about physical, mental and sensory disabilities than we ever have done – both at the cutting edge of medical science and as the layperson. There has been legislation brought forward to protect personal and professional rights for disabled persons.

But, an ableist culture persists, where we see able-bodied sport on TV much much much more than disabled sport. Visible disabilities are much less prevalent in mainstream media than in the population as a whole. Invisible disabilities are not talked about anywhere near as much as other health conditions.

This blog is designed to light the fire in your belly and commit to at least one piece of citizen activism to remind people who can make changes, that they should. If you are disabled, I don’t have to tell you this, but if you’re able-bodied, part of you being a better human is starting to think disability-first, whether that’s how you navigate a physical or virtual environment and whether respect and accessibility have been designed in or ignored completely.

Call out what shouldn’t need to be pointed out.

Next fortnight, I’ll be musing On Philosophy, as this Philosopher-in-Residence blog reaches its centenary edition. Diarise some existential introspection now.

Please get in touch with any particular aspects of this subject you’d like me to write about.

In the meantime,

Happy Planning
