ON CAMERA

The Philosopher-in-Residence Blog Series from Make Me A Plan's Principal Planner, Anna Pascoe
07.04.2022.

Seeing is believing, or so they say. This Philosopher-in-Residence has been pondering life through a lens recently, as we inhabit an epoch of everyone being an expert and everyone being able to share that on film or social media, posts that often have Schroedinger’s filter (geddit?)

I tend not to spend much time on social media these days, partly for neurological reasons and partly because, quite frankly, there are better things to do (shameless plug for MMAP’s ScreenFree SuperPlanners, check out our social media posts every weekend for tips and ideas to spend less time online).

I’ve noticed, of late, that when I dip my toe into a comment thread on a contentious issue, these are the top five most likely engagements:

  • Tumbleweed and no comment from the OP (even if the OP has stated in the post they are interested in what others think)
  • People I don’t know immediately classifying me as someone who doesn’t agree with x, y or z
  • Calls for “evidence” as to credibility
  • Deductive reasoning at defcon level 10 by other commenters
  • Looooooooong comment replies which don’t change views no matter how diplomatic or genuine debate is amongst other commenters

So, this Philosopher-in-Residence is posing the question: have we reached “peak on camera”? Are we now, paradoxically, becoming less able to determine between fact and belief, what is truly verified and what has a blue tick or an authoritative tone of voice?

If you have your own moral or mental checklist for factchecking and combating an echo chamber without it turning into an aggro chamber, I’d love to hear about this in the comments.

Next fortnight, I’ll be musing On Doctoring – this is likely to have a rights and compliance theme, with a distinctly Make Me A Plan flavour, of course.

Please get in touch with any particular aspects of this topic you’d like me to write about.

In the meantime,

Happy Planning
