ON FIVE

The Philosopher-in-Residence Blog Series from Make Me A Plan's Principal Planner, Anna Pascoe
25.05.2023.

What’s the word association in your head when you hear the number five? Perhaps it’s 5-a-side football, reminiscence of childhood reading Enid Blyton adventure of the Famous Five, or simply the days in your working week or the number between 4 and 6.

This is the second blog reflecting on 5 years of Make Me A Plan trading and when this Philosopher-in-Residence was thinking about what the number meant, it occurred to me that this is actually the longest time I’ve stayed in a job.

Although I’ve never been a job-hopper, over a career spanning around twenty years I had typically stayed with an organisation between 2 and 4 years, before moving on to a more senior role either internally or elsewhere.

The point I’m making here is not that you should be super-interested in the minutiae of my career. It’s more of a tempus fugit (look it up if you don’t know ?) reminder.

I’ve achieved a lot of things I wanted to, some that I didn’t plan to (don’t quote me on the not planned bit ? and also failed to achieve some things in that 5 years.

The fact it was my longest job only occurred to me almost by accident! John Lennon sang that life was something that happened to you while you were making other plans. So, the moral of this story is – if the years are rolling by in your job, are you achieving what you want to: right now and as your legacy? Keep coming back to that compass, good people of Plankind.

Next fortnight, I’ll be musing On Plastic (not literally!) and I promise the blog will have more than a single use. Stop by for your first serving.

Please get in touch with any particular aspects of this subject you’d like me to write about.

In the meantime,

Happy Planning
