ON MAKE ME A PLANEL
Whilst this Philosopher-in-Residence is no avid football fan, I did enjoy the thrall and talent of the recent England Euros win. What I didn’t enjoy was the gargantuan amount of abuse in every social media post I saw regarding the Lionesses’ progress and victory. Posts that started out as a positive piece of content were contaminated with vile sexist and racist abuse in the comments. Performances were criticised predominantly by waves of sexist comments, rather than in any relation to what had occurred on the pitch.
This made me feel sick, sad and angry in equal measure and I thought it was time to bring Make Me A Plan’s campaign for gender balance back to the fore. Captioned “Make Me A Planel”, the project started out because I was fed up of going to events, hearing expert commentary, reading the newspaper, flicking on the TV or radio and women being in the minority, or not even in the picture at all, in the 21st century.
You can read more about simple ways you can help call out this unfairness and prejudice here: https://www.makemeaplan.com/the-united-plandom/make-me-a-planel/
And later in the season, I’ll be announcing a special Make Me A Planel campaign against sexist online abuse. I’d love to hear from you if you can help with this.
Next fortnight I’ll be writing On Gardening, be sure to plant this in your diary. Please get in touch with any particular aspects of this subject you’d like me to write about.
In the meantime,
Happy Planning
