ON SMALL
Don’t sweat the small stuff. That used to be part of my online dating bio, back in the day. Much has changed and this Philosopher-in-Residence is now consciously coupled and prone to sweating small stuff on occasion.
How do you figure out what is overthinking and what is valuable attention to detail?
Through the medium of bingo, of course!
Draw some squares on a piece of paper – we suggest 8 squares, but you can do more if there are lots of things swirling around in your brain.
The squares need to be big enough to write in each of them! Jot down something (small) that you find yourself thinking about a lot. It could be whether to eat at home or dine out. To try and please everyone or to cook one tea that everyone has to eat. Finishing work early or staying on an hour to get something done. The things need to be binary choices or the self-help game won’t work ie, there needs to be an Option 1 and an alternative Option 2 that you would normally sweat the small stuff about which was best.
Cut the squares up. Throw a square up in the air. If it lands face up, you do Option 1, face down, you’ve guessed it, Option 2.
Stick to what the square says! No further overthinking or sweating of the small stuff here please.
Try it, if it works for you, let us know.
Next fortnight, I’ll be writing On Rudolph. Make sure you’ve red it.
Please get in touch with any particular aspects of this subject you’d like me to write about.
In the meantime,
Happy Planning
