ON TIME

The Philosopher-in-Residence Blog Series from Make Me A Plan's Principal Planner, Anna Pascoe
16.06.2022.

Regular fans of plans and readers of this blog will be familiar with this Philosopher-in-Residence’s penchant for puns, plays on words and suchlike. I therefore commence this latest edition with the confession that for last fortnight’s jubilee-themed On Queens blog, I entirely failed to notice the serendipitous splendour of that coinciding with the 70th publication of my humble blog. If you’ve been reading my musings that long, you will forgive that oversight I trust!

All of which nicely dovetails into today’s theme: On Time.

If you’ve never met me before, you should know that whilst I never let a client down and am best buddies with important deadlines when it comes to the world of business, in my personal life I’m what’s clunkily termed a “tidsoptimist” (someone who overestimates the amount of time they have available to do stuff). So I’m that person who instead of leaving 10 minutes early for something, thinks I could use that time to fold some laundry, do some other such suddenly vital bit of life or home admin and then of course, invariably end up arriving late.

So, having chosen the theme of time today I am sure many friends would have chuckled and wondered how on earth I was going to contribute anything on that topic.

However, I chose time since someone recently gave me some great advice. Since having meningitis, I often have problems recalling information, which is a pain anyway, but means that I can’t properly acknowledge who gave me the advice here (if it was you – let me know – I want to say thank you).

Said great advice was “try not to be temporal”. What does that slightly airy term mean?

In practise, it means not looking at the clock so often. Not trying to do things quickly. Not rushing, and especially not rushing from one thing to another. Not getting bogged down by where you feel you should be progress-wise today, this week, in life.

I thought that was great advice for the toolkit to this life, and so I wanted to share it with you today.

Next fortnight, I’ll be musing On Wonder, (insert cheesy pun here wondering if you’ll join me)…

Please get in touch with any particular aspects of this topic you’d like me to write about.

In the meantime,

Happy Planning
