The Philosopher-in-Residence Blog Series from Make Me A Plan's Principal Planner, Anna Pascoe

Ye members of Plankind, like this Philosopher-in-Residence, have probably come across myriad accreditations and awards in the world of business. Working Well specialist Pen was musing on leadership qualities in her blog last week and I’m following her lead (geddit?) with my thoughts on rating companies.

The idea for this blog arose a while back, having seen a couple of advertisements for business awards where, to be eligible for “Best” or “Top” categories or themes, you needed to have a certain number of staff. There weren’t any options for smaller, or different business models.

Sceptics might say that this fired my ire because I couldn’t enter. Whilst that wouldn’t be a false assumption, in the golden MMAP thread of taking a positive from a situation, this got me reflecting on how we could rank top companies in newer, disruptive, and potentially more meaningful ways.

Here’s what I came up with…

  1. All team members have at least one meaningful say in at least one meaningful project per period
  2. Thank you and please appear in at least 50% of internal emails
  3. Company has at least one quantified success measure that isn’t financial or hierarchical
  4. There is a plan or commitment set to ink to give more power to team members
  5. Personal passions are given space in a person-led way
