THE NEW NORM

The Relationship with Self Series from Make Me A Plan's Wellbeing Expert, Lauren Willoughby

So this is slightly off topic from what I had planned to speak about, but I’m feeling optimistic!!

As you have probably already seen, almost all of the coronavirus restrictions in the UK have now been lifted, after what feels like has been forever. Isn’t it strange how face coverings and social distancing now feel like the new norm?

The coronavirus pandemic has most defiantly changed all of our lives in some way or another. After a difficult couple of years and starting to see some sort of light at the end of this tunnel, I thought it would be good to reflect on the last 2 years whilst beginning to look forward to the future.

Reflecting back to the beginning of 2020, life seemed so normal. Who knew that in March we would be faced with the UK’s first national lockdown, to then be followed by 2 more! Being told to stay at home and not to leave our homes unless absolutely necessary came as a bit of a shock.

Naturally, due to the sudden and frequently changing restrictions implemented into all of our daily lives, so many people have deeply suffered with their mental health.

Schools were closed, exams cancelled, shops unable to remain open, some never opening again. We were told to work from home whilst care homes / hospitals had closed their doors to visitors.

Although the situation was far from ideal, it gave us a chance to love, to spend quality time with those we love at home; what else was there to do!? It gave us an opportunity to get things done at home, things that we have been meaning to do for a while but haven’t found the time to do! I decorated my whole house, and the gardens.

We have loved, we have lost loved ones and we have gained loved ones, but what matters now is the future.

Tips on transitioning back to ‘normal life’

-        If you feel comfortable doing so, start arranging/making plans with family and friends – safely of course.

-        Covid is still out there, this could bring a lot of anxiety for some. It is always easier to avoid socialising with friends and family, but distracting yourself from the situation will make it harder to overcome that anxious feeling long term. Set some small, achievable targets, like meeting a friend outside for coffee, and continue to build up from there.

-         Transitioning back to normal life can be a real struggle for some, but you are defiantly not alone, there will be someone else feeling the exact way you do! Open up to someone you trust, there are also many different organisations ready and waiting to help and support you.

-        Write down your thoughts – this is a good way to track your moods and progress

Although covid restrictions have now been lifted, it is still extremely important to be mindful that coronavirus is still here, and it is still spreading. Assess situations yourself, social distance and wear a face covering if you feel you need too! Keep yourself and your loved ones safe, I don’t know about you, but I don’t fancy a 4th lockdown!!!
