THE POWER OF THE MESSY MIDDLE

The Being Yourself Series, from Make Me A Plan's Performance Planner, Gemma Mullinger

There’s a place in many journeys which we don’t often talk about. Most of us love a beginning! Receiving congratulations for a new job or relationship, starting a qualification, a new academic year or business venture. And of course, when the finish line appears, and we can be certain we’ve achieved, we are understandably keen to celebrate.

But, what about the bit in-between?

The challenging times, the ups and downs, the times where we don’t feel completely sure we will make it? Do we give that part of our journey enough recognition? Perhaps we are fearful of what people will say or think. Scared to admit, even to ourselves, that we might get there. It is in this ‘messy middle’, however, that the highest potential for growth lies. In the times where we need to overcome obstacles, push through challenges, break through our limiting beliefs. This is where we become more resilient, develop strength, and learn to have faith in ourselves and our own ability and power.

When we look back on our experiences, when we have made it to the other side, we can connect the dots. It all makes sense now! It had to happen that way for the outcome to be as it was, and for us to take from it what we did. But, while you are there, entrenched in the overwhelm, the emotion, the worry and uncertainty, it can feel as though there is no end. That you will never feel right again. That there is no light at the end of the tunnel. Something we can be sure of though, is that the messy middle will teach us a lot about the person we are becoming. It can be a powerful reminder of who we are and what we are capable of.

If you are there right now, know that one day you will be looking back, feeling proud of yourself for getting through and for everything you learnt along the way.
