WORKING WELL WITH MAIN CHARACTER ENERGY!
We’ve all met that colleague—the one who walks into every meeting like it’s their personal spotlight, turning small updates into dramatic arcs and casual conversations into monologues. Some call it “main character energy,” and while it can be entertaining at times, it can also make teamwork tricky.
So how do you manage working with someone who always seems to place themselves centre stage?
First, stay grounded in your own role. Don’t get swept up in their narrative or feel pressured to compete for attention. Keep your contributions clear, focused, and tied to the team’s goals. This anchors the conversation back to what really matters.
Second, redirect the spotlight when needed. If your colleague dominates discussions, try phrases like: “That’s interesting, and I’d love to hear what others think too.” This keeps things balanced without shutting them down.
Third, set boundaries kindly. If they consistently derail projects, you can politely but firmly steer back: “That’s a good point – but let’s get back to the agenda so we stay on track.” It’s professional, not personal.
Finally, look for the positives. People with main character energy often bring enthusiasm and creativity. When channelled well, they can energise the team. Acknowledging their strengths while guiding their focus can turn potential friction into collaboration.
At the end of the day, remember you don’t have to dim their spotlight—you just need to make sure it doesn’t outshine everyone else’s.
