HOW TO HAVE A "SPRING CLEAN" AT WORK

The Working Well Series, from Make Me A Plan Productivity Expert, Pen Le Kelly

Spring isn’t just for clearing out cupboards at home, it’s the perfect time to refresh your working life too. With a new season (and a new financial year) ahead, a workplace “spring clean” can set you up for a smoother, more successful 2026. Here’s where to start.

1. Reset your priorities

Before the new financial year kicks in, revisit your goals. Are they still aligned with your company’s direction? In 2026, many organisations are doubling down on smarter working. Think about automation, AI integration, and tighter budgets. Make sure your objectives reflect where the business is heading, not where it was last year.

2. Declutter your digital life

Inbox at 12,764 unread emails? Desktop covered in random files? Now’s the time.

Archive old emails. Clean up shared drives. Rename and organise key documents. Clear folder structures not only save time but also reduce stress and improve collaboration. Data hygiene is more important than ever, especially with increasing cybersecurity risks and compliance requirements.

3. Review financial readiness

New financial year = fresh budgets.
Are you tracking spending properly? Do you know which subscriptions, tools or projects delivered real ROI last year? Identify waste, flag upcoming costs, and make sure forecasts are realistic. In 2026, cost-efficiency is key, being proactive puts you ahead.

4. Upgrade your skills

The workplace continues to evolve quickly. AI tools, automation platforms and digital systems are becoming everyday essentials. Take stock of your skill gaps. Is there a course, certification or system training you’ve been putting off? A small investment in upskilling now can pay dividends all year.

5. Refresh your ways of working

Hybrid and flexible working are firmly embedded in 2026. Are your communication habits effective? Are meetings purposeful? Could processes be streamlined? Spring is a great time to simplify... fewer unnecessary meetings, clearer reporting, better collaboration.

6. Don’t forget wellbeing

Finally, check in with yourself. Burnout doesn’t disappear just because the calendar flips. Build in breaks, reset boundaries, and plan annual leave early.

A workplace spring clean isn’t about perfection - it’s about clarity. Clear goals, clear systems, clear focus. Do it now, and you’ll head into the new financial year organised, confident, and ready for whatever 2026 brings.
