ON LISTENING

The Philosopher-in-Residence Blog Series from Make Me A Plan's Principal Planner, Anna Pascoe
06.07.2023.

We are observing fragmented and fractious times in the great United Plandom at present: whether it be Just Stop Oil protesters, precariously squeezed finances or political pointscoring.

The good ship MMAP likes to try to help steer a course of calm through troubled waters. To this end, this Philosopher-in-Residence had put together a few tips for guiding you on listening, when it may feel like the world isn’t.

1.      Take notes, and take note.

If the world is swirling around you, a great way of avoiding getting overwhelmed is to school yourself to always take notes. This helps structure your thoughts, gives you a record of what the reality is, and helps you make a plan to make progress. It’s vital to keep referring back to this, or else your primitive brain may jump to the negative when you’re under stress, and that will make you feel worse and less able to cope with moving forward.

2.     Pay attention and be present.

Pandemic life and a gaggle of gadgetry has made many people feel permanently switched on. Check your behaviour. Don’t jump on that phone first thing in the morning. Don’t look at your laptop and phone whilst trying to have a conversation with a colleague. Don’t prioritise messaging over seeing your mates. Sounds a no-brainer – but are you doing this? Sounds unfeasible? Try just one thing.

3.     Enjoy the Silence.

Not a throwback to the 90s song (although this Philosopher-in-Residence does enjoy a bit of Depeche Mode). When was the last time you sat outside or by a window and just listened to nature? If you can’t remember, do it! And if it was really recently, keep up the good work.

Next fortnight, I’ll be musing On Ableism – don’t ignore it, don’t perpetuate.

Please get in touch with any particular aspects of this subject you’d like me to write about.

In the meantime,

Happy Planning
